Skilled Cabinetmaking Helper

The Fogo Island Shop is seeking a Skilled Cabinetmaking Helper to join its growing team on Fogo Island, based in the newly renovated Society of United Fishermen’s Hall in Barr’d Islands. If you enjoy working with wood, are good with your hands and creative with a keen eye for detail, this could be the perfect position for you. 


Key Responsibilities:


The Cabinetmaker Helper will assist master cabinetmaker to build and repair custom or production-type furniture and fixtures made of wood.


The Cabinetmaker Helper will assist the Master Cabinetmaker to produce custom-made wood products.


They will learn to:


  • Read and interpret detailed drawings and develop shop drawings.
  • Estimate the amount and type of material needed and the cost.
  • Select the wood.
  • Make layouts and patterns.
  • Set up and operate woodworking equipment.
  • Cut, shape, mold and assemble components of wood.
  • Assemble the products by gluing, clamping, dowelling, nailing and screwing pieces together.
  • Scrape and sand wooden surfaces.
  • Apply finishes such as stain, oil, or paint to completed surfaces.
  • Perform additional duties as per the needs of the Shop.


Qualifications, Skills, and Personal Attributes:


  • Woodworking experience
  • Finishing experience an asset
  • Good communication skills
  • Exceptionally attentive to detail.
  • Ability to time manage and multi-task.
  • Knowledgeable about the Fogo Island Shop and other initiatives of the Shorefast Foundation.
  • Commitment to upholding the vision and goals of the Shorefast Foundation.
  • Sensitive to the history and culture of rural Newfoundland.

Fogo Island Shop is an initiative of Shorefast Foundation, a registered charity that exists to improve the social, cultural, and economic conditions on Fogo Island, Newfoundland. The Shop is a social business which means that all of its profits are reinvested for the benefit of the local community through the Foundation. Fogo Island Shop sells its products through its woodworking shop on Fogo Island, online at, and through a various retail partnerships across the country.
